More than 120 years ago, the Ute Indians resided here and they called this beautiful area “Shining Mountains”. The community now known as Aspen was first settled in 1879, and then quickly became the nation’s most productive mining district for silver. By 1893 Aspen had grown to more than 12,000 residents and had all the conveniences of a small town – there was even an opera house here. Years later, when silver production declined, the town was almost abandoned and in 1930 only 705 people remained. Many of Aspen’s most important buildings from this era still stand today. Raised over a short ten year time period, these Victorian residences give Aspen, CO real estate a special sparkle and elegance today.
In the mid 1930s, a pioneering group of visitors rediscovered Aspen as a ski resort. Although their plans to develop Aspen into a world-class winter destination was interrupted by World War II, they decidedly felt they had never seen such consistent ski terrain and powder quality. After the war, the development of Aspen into a ski resort started up with the help and financial backing of Chicago industrialist Walter Peapcke. Peapcke and his wife had a vision for Aspen that went beyond a ski resort, and many say it is thanks to this vision that Aspen today is also a great cultural and artistic center.
Set in an incredible landscape, with an abundance of political and cultural activity, Aspen glitters like never before. The Victorian architecture reflects an exciting past, and in combination with the exciting developments continually happening here, Aspen is ensuring its place in history for generations to come.
